The Lion Lights
Michael Kahumbu lives with his big family in Africa. He has been helping his father to take care 30 ______ their sheep since he was nine years old. Unfortunately, lions’ attacks on farm animals are quite common in their region. One day the boy decided to protect their sheep and 31 ______ lions’ attacks. While walking around the pasture late in the evening Michael noticed that lions were afraid of his moving flashlight and stayed away from their place.
Soon he realised how to trick the wild cougars. As a true innovator, he was eager to experiment without worrying that his 32 ______ might not work. This boy, who had taken apart old machines since he was very small, began working on his invention. Despite his 33 ______ of any formal training in electrical engineering, he designed a system of flashing LED light bulbs on poles and placed it around their pasture. Surprisingly, these blinking lights, which he made from car headlights, car batteries, and a solar panel, scared the lions away from their territory.
Eventually, the word got out about the brilliant “lion-lights boy” and Michael 34 ______ the Lion Lights system for many of his neighbours. His invention won him a scholarship to one of the most prestigious schools in Kenya. And when Michael was 13, he was invited to 35 ______ about his unique system at an international conference. A visit
Early the next afternoon, Peter dropped by for a visit. “It’s hot in here,” he said, taking 32 ______ his wet coat and throwing it over the back of a chair. His hair was wet, his face flushed. “Don’t go outside, whatever you do,” he said. “It’s terrible outside. By the way, you haven’t 33 ______ Dave, have you?”
I ran a hand through my hair. It was a Friday afternoon, no class and I hadn’t been out of my room all day. I worked hard translating a Greek poem.
“Dave stopped by last night,” I said. Peter was fanatical about them, but I didn’t like them much. A new house
When Martha got to the Mansfield Mansion by taxi the next morning, she stood at the gate for a long moment. She was trying to absorb the fact that this was now her home. She couldn’t relate to it, or even understand it, as the realtor opened the gate and she walked into the courtyard, 30 ______ up at the elegant windows and the dignified architecture. She had to 31 ______ it was one of the most beautiful houses she’d ever seen. Walking through it took her breath away. There was room after room of century-old grandeur, remarkable workmanship, exquisite moldings and carvings. A night in the Eifel Tower
Seven million people visit the Eiffel Tower every year. But have you ever dreamed 32 ______ sleeping in this iconic structure?
Holiday rental company Viva constructed a temporary VIP apartment on the first level of the tower, open only for the duration of the Euro football tournament from 10 June to 10 July 2016. The two-bedroom apartment, with the best Paris views was furnished with a big screen television for 33 ______ the game. The space also included a seating area filled with hanging plants.
A lot of people were attracted by the 34 ______ to sleep in the apartment. To determine who got this chance, Viva 35 ______ a contest asking entrants to describe how they would spend their night in the tower.
“My two young sons are autistic and are both obsessed with lights and the tower itself so I’d spend the night 36 ______ their excitement!” was the winning response from Michelle, in the UK.
Scott, from the United States, 37 ______ to win a night’s stay with his response about reuniting five generations in Paris: his mother who first visited the city in 1953, his daughter and granddaughter who visited at 13 and 14 respectively, and a brand new granddaughter who joined the trip.
